Ice Storm 2009 This winter has been a difficult one for Loucon. Instead of our focus being retreats and prep for summer camp it has been divided between those things and a major storm clean-up. Grayson county was hit very hard in the storm. Power was out at Loucon for 19 days, and even longer for some parts of the county. Loucon lost food, experienced broken pipes, and some damage to the facility. It was amazing to see the hand of God protecting this ministry! Instead of trees crashing into buildings for the most part trees fell away from and around vital areas. A tree did take out the carport at Max Miller House and various trees caused minimal roof damage to a few places overall it was more amazing what did escape. During the storm the staff on site, Benji & Sam, did an admirable job protecting families, shutting down facilities, and inviting initial work teams. Our office staff set up at a home in Adair county, transferred the phones, and operated as close to normal as possible. Our first work team came out the first Friday after the storm...wow! Elizabethtown district and Christ church were ready to help get things cleaned up. Since then over 300 volunteers have come to Loucon to help with clean-up...we still have a long way to go! Let us know if you can help. The good news is we are making steady progress, and it is our intention to be ready for summer camp. It looks like that will be realized; however it will take us right up to the start of summer camp to realize that hope. God has been faithful and the work teams have been a great blessing to Loucon. Thank you so much! We have been overwhelmed by your kindness and servant hearts. many said that they had to give back to a ministry that has blessed them and their families, a vital ministry of the conference, and what they consider to be Holy Ground! Thanks so much, keep the work teams coming, and thank you for the prayers! This week the chipper is in full effect along with work crews loading limbs, pulling trees out of the lake, rebuilding a bridge, and making Loucon look like the place we know and love. Our zipline and other adventure activities are safe and operational...the zipline had to be rebuilt. Amazing what God has accomplished in such a short time. Loucon was able to house some of the out of state electrical workers during the relief efforts, and we hope to be better prepared for such a role in the future. If power could have been restored we could have provided housing and meals for the community. It is our hope that next time we can be help in time of need. For now, thank you so much for all of your help in our time of need! 2008 Summer Camp...Wow! This summer started out a little slow with schools being delayed due to snow; however it ended just 28 campers shy of last year's numbers at 1,178 campers. Although our numbers were down the ministry that God brought to Loucon this summer was amazing. The summer staff came in renewed and focused on being obedient to God's calling, and the result was 711 campers making some type of decision about their faith/relationship in Christ. 153 of those were first time commitments. Wow, God is amazing, faithful, and a list of other things that I just cannot fathom. God continues to bless this ministry, those who attend, and those who are involved in ways that one cannot imagine. Thank you Lord for your harvest! Please continue to be with these campers during the rest of the year...help them to maintain their faith in you, to stay strong and true. And may they find a place of fellowship that nurtures them in their relationship with you! Meet the new staff...May 2008 Our 2008 summer camping season is about to begin, and this year brings some old friends into new positions. Due to the growth that Loucon has incurred in its ministry over the last 3 years we have felt the need to expand our program director position into a Program Staff. We have hired Samuel Kennady and Abby Downs to become our new program staff. They will divide the hosting and programming duties of our previous program director's position. Abby Downs has served on Loucon's summer staff for eight summers. She has been a strong presence in our retreat seasons and was a major help in the spring of 2008 after Mike moved to West Virginia. Abby is a graduate of Lindsey Wilson. Abby had her hands in a lot of ministry both at Loucon and Lindsey Wilson. She is a welcome addition to the Loucon staff! Sam Kennady is a student at the University of Louisville and an assistant to the youth director at Memorial UMC in Elizabethtown, KY. Sam served on the 2007 summer staff. Sam brings a lot of real world experience both in the business and ministry world. He will make a big impact on our ministry. A new phase...February 2008 Loucon will be offering congratulations and saying good bye to Michael Curry, who has served faithfully as our program director over the last five plus years. Mike will be marrying Lynsey Skaggs who he met at Loucon. They will be residing in West Virginia while Lynsey finishes school. Mike, thanks so much for all that you have allowed Christ to do in and through you these past 10 years of service at Loucon. Mike served on summer staff, performed an internship, was an assistant host/program director, and program director. Open Air Chapel...December 2007 The Open Air chapel renovation was completed in May of 2007. After the inflatable's guy ran into the chapel at New Song 07 it was re renovated in December of 2007! Christmas Camp...December 8-10, 2006 What a great time we had last year when our Sr. High Assembly camp had a reunion of sorts in December. It was a time to see old friends, fellowship with one another, and to continue to work on our relationship with God. It was Loucon's first Christmas camp since 1993. At that time the camp hosted a Junior High camp for three days. It was a great weekend that included finding a tree, decorating, normal camp activities, Worship, and a celebration of the birth of our Savior! It was always a great experience. It was a mixture of our old camp and a fantastic reunion for our Sr. High Assembly campers! And we are going to do it all over again this December! If you have never been to Sr. High Assembly don't let that stop you from coming...It will be fun for everyone. Oh, just in case you are interested in our Christmas Camp it will be held Friday, December 8 starting at 6:00 pm until Sunday at 10:00 am. We will make accommodations for those who need to come in late. Just don't miss out on all the fun!!! Click here for a downloadable PDF registration form. ($60). Open Air Chapel getting Fixed The Open Air Chapel has been a major part of the Loucon experience since it was built in 1966. Almost 40 years have been good to our campers; however it has taken its toll on this outdoor worship area. The roof leaks, and there are some other issues related to that leakage. So, thanks to some loving campers, counselors, a dean, and a family Open Air will be getting just what it needs...lots of love and care! This summer campers, counselors, and the dean of Jr. High 2, Dan Smith, decided something needed to be done about this deterioration. They began to pull resources to repair this beloved building which is also where Dan and several others have accepted Christ into their heart! After getting a quote on the materials we were quite a long distance from reaching the necessary funds to fix Open Air. Then God led the Royster family to provide the rest. They gave the money for renovation in honor of Jane G. Royster's 60th birthday. Jane is such a wonderful example of how Christ intends for us to live and love others that this seemed like the perfect fit! Thank you to the Royster family and all those who have given to help get Open Air back into shape. The renovation will be completed before the summer of 2007!
