During our staff orientation a tornado came through our area knocking down several trees.  It left no facility damage except for the low elements wall and some damage to Green Cathedral.  It was followed by another large storm a week or so later.  The entire summer has been hit and misses with weather this year; however it has not deterred the staff, deans, and counselors one bit from sharing Jesus.  On July 13th a very severe thunderstorm with hurricane type winds came through camp again.  This one caused some structural damage to Munday, Village Cabin #3, Robb lodge, and a few other facilities at camp.  It also knocked down several more trees.  Our staff quickly reacted and kept all of the campers from harms way in our basement facilities while leading worship and games.  Even in the midst of the storms God was being lifted up!  In the same way when storms come into our lives, we should be lifting up Christ!  We are thankful that God chose to work in the midst of the storm as He often does in the storms of our lives.  And we are very thankful for all those who have volunteered to help clean up and make the continuation of camp a reality! Its Cabin Building Time! We will begin building new cabins in Orchard and Robb this spring. The plan is for two cabins in Orchard and two in Robb. Then starting in 2005 we will take out two cabins in each area and build two replacement cabins. In five years we will have entirely new cabins in the Orchard and Robb areas. They will be more efficient, cleaner, better insulated, and will increase our summer and winter capacity. They will have heat pumps to make the winters more comfortable. We are still looking for funds and volunteers to make the project possible. If you can provide either please contact Warren. Some churches are working to sponsor individual cabins. That is a great idea!

Short Cottage receives a FACE-LIFT! Benji began renovation of Short Cottage's kitchen on January 9th. You won't recognize the kitchen upon your next visit to this historical Loucon building. In addition to the kitchen there will also be some work done to the bathrooms and a new metal roof will be added. In addition to last years heating and electrical adjustments Short cottage is becoming a great place for a small retreat group. If you are looking for a project we could use some help to complete the work, so contact Warren or Benji and we'll set up a time for you to help out. The renovation should be complete by the end of February.

There is a changing of the guard of sorts at Loucon. Debbie Hensel, a long time kitchen/housekeeping employee, will be taking a new yet familiar role as Loucon's secretary. Debbie was the secretary from 1995-1996. We are expecting great things from Debbie. She is doing a great job. Also, our secretary, Susan Warrell, will be taking a new position as Loucon's first Camp Registrar! She has so many great ideas about how to improve the process. We are excited about all that Susan has in store for camper registration. Please be praying for each of these hard workers in their new roles.

Loucon's New Rate Brochures are available. Loucon has a new rate brochure that includes pictures and descriptions of our facilities and activities. If you or your organization need one please contact the Loucon office and we will send one out in the mail. It is a very informative brochure and should be helpful in planning your retreat at Loucon.

September 2003

First Family Camp held at Loucon. About 8 families joined us for a spectacular weekend! It was definitely a weekend to remember. It brought many of the families closer together, and it helped them put their family's focus on God! We hope to see you and your family next year! Rev. Jim Seelhorst and Rev. Carlton Puryear were our deans/leaders for the retreat. They did an excellent job.

Loucon's first Newsletter was mailed out in September. It is a beautiful collection of pictures and articles that provide the reader with some important information about summer camp, the retreat season, new song, and some of the other wonderful things occurring at Loucon. It also gave a list of some of the camp's needs and of upcoming work opportunities. If you want to be on the mailing list for the next one contact the Loucon office.

New Song gets bigger and better! An amazing weekend filled with God's Love! A banner year for turn out and God was definitely working in the crowd! The new song committee did a great job with the festival, and God did the rest. Several people accepted Christ, and that is what the concert is all about! Also, New Song is a fund raising event for Loucon through its concessions. This year was one of our most profitable events. That money will go towards building/renovating cabins as will the money given as a gift from the New Song festival. Thank you New Song!

August 1, 2003

2003 summer camping season a success! 1,386 campers attended Loucon. 683 made some decision about the relationship with Christ! God was moving. An amazing staff was assembled by God this year, and God truly worked through them to bring glory to His name!

Retirement well deserved, This March Patricia Wagner will be retiring from her role as the Director of Loucon. She and her husband Jerry have served God faithfully at Loucon over the last 7 years, and they will be greatly missed. Although this means that their role at Loucon will be different make no mistake that this will not be the end of their service to God. They are currently seeking God's will for their next ministry opportunity, for isn't that what life is about...Serving God each and every day! We want to thank Pat and Jerry for their hard work and dedication to Loucon, its staff, all who enter its gates, and to our Loving Father in Heaven!
