Loucon Summer Staff
What does a Summer Staff member do? In one word, a summer staff member does just about “everything”. The staff is what makes Loucon run. One will spend the day working directly or indirectly with the 1200+ campers, 300+ volunteer deans and counselors, fellow staff members, and the full time kitchen and program staff. This could include any of the following duties: kitchen work, maintenance, crafts, canteen, leading hikes, or just playing games with the campers. If the proper training was completed during our weekend sessions in May, one might lead activities such as high ropes, climbing, rappelling, low elements, zipline, teambuilding, or lifeguarding at our pool or waterfront.
What age campers will I be working with? Loucon campers range in age from rising 2nd graders to seniors in high school.
How long is the employment period? A position on summer staff is a nine week commitment. There is one week of mandatory Staff Orientation and eight weeks of summer camp.
How many staff members will be hired? The number of staff members varies year to year based on need and the quality of the applicants, but usually around 25.
What are the requirements? Loucon will consider any male or female who is a follower of Jesus Christ. Summer staff applicants must be at least 18 years of age and a high school graduate.
What does the job pay? Many consider the pay of this job to be the only drawback. Regardless of the pay, the experience of a summer at Loucon cannot be measured. It is a ministry position with opportunities for growth in all aspects of life. Many former staff members viewed it as a summer long mission trip. If you still want to know, it’s $100 a week for first year workers.
What do I do if I’m interested? One can download the Summer Staff application from the bottom of the forms page or contact the Director, Warren Hopper at Warren@Loucon.org or call 270-242-7160. All applications are due by March 1, 2008.
