Sr. High Christmas Camp 2009

Loucon’s fourth annual Senior High Christmas camp was a tremendous success and a lot of fun!  The campers arrived to find that the staff was well prepared for us, as usual.  We had an incredible group of counselors, as well.  There was a nice mix of Senior High Assembly veterans, along with students who were first time campers.  We started the weekend off with ice breakers and games, so it didn’t take long for all of us to get to know one another.

As part of our spiritual emphasis this year, we used the popular movie, “Up.”  It worked well as a metaphor illustrating how we tend to try to escape the reality of the present, as opposed to allowing God to work His will in our lives in what can be the uncomfortable here and now.  We had some great studies, and we also conducted an open forum, where campers submitted questions regarding any topic that was of interest to them.  The topics are then discussed amongst the group.

One of the popular highlights of Christmas camp has always been the free time the campers have to spend together.  The environment is incredible, and it affords young people the opportunity to fellowship with other Christians. This year was no different.  In fact, many opted out of action options to spend that extra time hanging out and just enjoying each other’s company. While some were off repelling or zip lining, many were enjoying touch football or capture the flag, sitting around and talking, making ornaments for the Christmas tree, or in some instances, off in a small group singing praise songs together.

On Saturday morning we were involved in a service project for the camp.  After that we ventured into a wooded area in search of a Christmas tree.  Due to the large amount of trees that were lost to the ice storm this past year, we decided not to chop down another, so Sam Kennady cleverly surprised the kids by stationing an artificial tree (complete with lights) for them to find.  They loved it!  That night we went on a hayride, enjoyed a campfire, and concluded the day’s activities with some folk dancing, before heading back to the lodge.  We woke up on Sunday morning, had breakfast, and headed for home, having made new friends in Christ and strengthened existing relationships.

We can’t wait to see what the Lord has in store for us next Christmas!
